A centuries old trend, a keeping room or “hearth room” first appeared in the late 1700’s. Back then there was a more practical reason for a large keeping room, or family room. Usually the keeping room had a fireplace or wood stove, which was also used as the kitchen. And in the winter the “family” would sleep there. This was to “keep” the family warm. Remember this was before any wide spread use of central heating.
Over the years this space has evolved, but it still retains a few specific elements that make a room a keeping room. They must the adjacent to the kitchen, and they must have a fireplace. Usually the fireplace is the focal point of the room, however today that focal point is more often then not an entertainment center.
