NAHB Leadership Provides Feedback on Mortgage Refinancing Proposals

Members of the NAHB Executive Board were invited to participate in a conference call with White House officials this week to discuss legislation aimed at removing obstacles to refinancing underwater mortgages. The call provided NAHB members an opportunity to get detailed updates on these initiatives and to ask questions about these and other efforts to improve housing conditions.

As reported in the Monday Morning Briefing and elsewhere, NAHB has been actively seeking solutions to mortgage foreclosure and appraisal problems that have been hampering a housing recovery. As such, the White House call gave our leadership an excellent forum to present policy recommendations that have been developed at recent board meetings.

Detroit Rally Stokes Public Support for Homeownership

NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg and First Vice Chairman Rick Judson were on hand for a well-attended Homeownership Rally in Detroit on July 20. This fourth event of its kind was produced by NAHB along with the Michigan Association of Home Builders and the BIA of Southeastern Michigan to highlight the importance of homeownership to the voting public and elevate key housing issues in the political debate heading toward the November elections.

NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg had the honor of leading off the rally, with several notable public servants and other homeownership advocates also addressing the crowd -- including U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) Quicken Loans' CEO Bill Emerson and Michigan Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Michael Finney, to name just a few.

A crowd of more than 650 people turned out at the Gardenview Estates development to show their support for homeownership and sign a petition requesting their lawmakers' help in protecting the mortgage interest deduction; guaranteeing credit-worthy consumers and small businesses the opportunity to obtain mortgages and loans; and resolving the foreclosure crisis. There was also a strong media turnout, and parts of the event were broadcast live by the local NBC news affiliate.

This was just the latest in a series of rallies that NAHB has planned in key swing states to elevate housing issues in the current election cycle and mobilize public support for government policies to encourage homeownership. Going forward, additional rallies are scheduled to take place in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 25; Milwaukee, Wis. on Oct. 2; Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 9; Richmond, Va., on Oct. 11; and Las Vegas, Nev., on Oct. 18.  If you live within striking distance of any of these upcoming events, you are welcome to register to attend one and sign the ever-growing petition.
